Secuoya Studios is setting a powerful example for sustainability in the entertainment world, and now they’re about to be recognized on one of the biggest stages in television. At the upcoming MIPCOM event in Cannes, Secuoya Studios will be honored with the 2025 MIP SDG Award, a prestigious accolade presented in partnership with the United Nations. This award celebrates companies that are actively promoting the UN’s Sustainable Development Goals through their contributions to TV and streaming content. But here’s where it gets even more interesting — Secuoya is not just participating; they are pioneering green production standards in Spain, a country where such sustainable practices are only beginning to gain traction.
Based in Madrid, Secuoya Studios has made a name for itself with popular series like Shades (Matices), Montecristo, and Zorro. Yet beyond their creative success, they have distinguished themselves as leaders in environmental responsibility within the Spanish production industry. The program that earned them this recognition includes the Greenbook Sustainable Filming Protocol—a comprehensive guideline developed in collaboration with Mrs. Greenfilm, a well-respected ecological consultancy. This protocol serves as a manual for productions aiming to minimize their ecological footprint.
Moreover, Secuoya established Spain's very first independently audited Sustainable Management Seal, a certification that ensures their projects meet strict environmental standards. They’ve even gone a step further by creating a dedicated sustainability department within the company. Each project is assigned an Eco Manager, someone whose sole responsibility is to oversee and implement eco-friendly practices on set.
Brendan Fitzgerald, Secuoya’s CEO, puts it simply: “Sustainability at Secuoya is more than a trend – it’s the core of how we conceive, produce, and deliver our content. We believe true innovation comes from integrating technology and partnerships that create real, lasting impact.” He highlights that winning this award is not just about recognition; it’s about showcasing how widely feasible and essential sustainable production practices can be across the industry.
The award ceremony will take place on October 15 during MIPCOM Cannes, which runs from October 13 to 16. Caroline Petit, Deputy Director of the United Nations Regional Information Centre for Europe, will present the award during a session dedicated to sustainability in the industry. It’s worth noting that Secuoya joins an impressive list of previous winners, including industry giants like A+E Networks, Sky, and Studio Silverback – companies known for leading the way in integrating sustainability with media production.
And this is the part most people miss: while the entertainment industry often faces criticism for its environmental impact, Secuoya Studios is proving that large-scale, popular productions can still prioritize the planet. Could this be a sign of a larger shift in how content is created worldwide? What do you think—are other studios likely to follow Secuoya's lead, or is this simply a niche approach?
